The Cooper River Dragon Boat Race
Our Philadelphia based organization (SEADBF) has hosted numerous dragon boat races, including an annual South East Asian Dragon Boat Festival based at Penn’s Landing. This year, in 2020, we’re shifting to the Cooper River in Camden County, New Jersey, and re-casting the event as the Cambodian Water Festival & Dragon Boat Race!
Dragon Boat Racing | A Quick Introduction
Dragon Boat teams consist of 20 forward facing paddlers seated in pairs. The boats used are long and narrow as well as shaped and painted in the image of dragons (or sea serpents). A drummer seated at the head of the dragon boat helps set the rhythm so that the paddlers work in unison. While this sport demands both strength and endurance, teamwork is essential! Both single and mixed-gender teams compete.
Dragon Boat | A Fast Growing Water Sport
Dragon Boat Racing has proven to be such a fun and engaging sport that its become one of the world’s fastest growing water sports. Organizations in more than 40 countries are members of the International Dragon Boat Federation!
